Assistance After a Water Disaster

Water disasters at your workplace can be detrimental to your business. Soggy walls from a busted pipe or an overflowing toilet that runs from your back room into your storefront can cause extensive damage in just a few minutes. Our team will come out to your home quickly to assess the situation and start on repairs.

We will locate the source of the leak, stop the flow of water and then start drying out your home. We will also ensure that any damaged floors, walls or ceilings are repaired to the highest safety standards.

Lingering moisture can lead to mold growth, which can be hazardous to your staff and customers, so we use our thermal imaging cameras to ensure every drop of moisture is gone.

Handling Fire Disasters

Fire can be a nightmare for any business owner. A single forgotten candle or a malfunctioning toaster oven in the breakroom can be all it takes for a full blaze to start and destroy entire rooms or levels of your business.

Our team is trained in large-loss recovery, and our project manager will lead our team through the entire restoration process. We will remove burned debris, clean and sanitize against soot and smoke odors, and also make sure your property is repaired from top to bottom.

Fire can lead to temporary displacement while the repairs are taking place, which we know can be troubling for the success of your business and for your bottom line. Our team works quickly, but efficiently, to ensure your property is returned to its preloss state as fast as possible.

Cleaning and Construction
Our services don’t stop there! We can also help you tackle any of your cleaning needs. We can deep-clean your carpets, address a potential mold infestation, and even clear out your air ducts.

Big Box Bathroom

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Contaminated Toilet This is just one area of a large bathroom that was completely affected by CAT 3 water.

Having to go to the bathroom in a public place sometimes can be uncomfortable.  Some people are very comfortable with it, while others cannot do it at all.  I am somewhere in the middle, I am comfortable with a public bathroom as long as it is properly maintained.

When you're shopping at a store, you can usually expect the bathrooms to be relatively cleaned.  Most places have policies in place to make sure that their facilities are cleaned regularly.  That being said, you cannot expect a teenager working at a big box store to clean up a CAT 3 sewage loss.  That's when you call in the big guns.

Early on a Friday morning, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was called to a local strip mall to clean up a sewage back-up in their bathroom.  Upon arrival, the crew found contaminated water in multiple bathrooms and a break room.  They wasted no time treating, steam cleaning, scrubbing, and disinfecting everything the water touched.  This ensured that the next person in that bathroom would not have to worry about an odor or getting dirty!

The store was able to open a few hours later, and they were grateful that SERVPRO was there to save the day!

Emergency Department Flood

Our on call team headed out to the loss site immediately to stabilize the environment.  We take great pride in having the knowledge of how to effectively and safely dry-out commercial structures.  There are many moving pieces to commercial losses including knowing the entrance points, understanding how work flow cannot be interrupted during mitigation, and managing multiple contact personnel.

When SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua gets called in for a commercial loss, we prepare to coordinate many moving parts to ensure the damages are minimized from the first minute!  You can rest easy with your business in the hands of professionals that love to take care of the BUSINESS of drying things out!

When To Shut Off the Water at a Commercial Building

12/12/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial building owners and managers may need to shut off the main water supply for several reasons. Bursting pipes and plumbing work in or around a structure may necessitate turning off the flow of water through the pipes of a structure for a temporary period of time. Find out more about three scenarios in which it could be necessary to turn off a building’s water.

1. When A Supply Line Breaks
Shutting off the water supply is the most effective way to limit damage until a broken line can be fixed. While the water that remains in a pipe at the time of shutoff will still leak, the flow will be slower and soon come to a stop. Collecting leaking water in containers may enable a business or commercial property owner to reduce the amount of cleanup and restoration necessary.

2. During Plumbing Maintenance or Repairs
A plumber can fix broken pipe and inspect plumbing before turning the water in a structure back on. If a pipe has not necessitated emergency maintenance, a licensed plumbing professional can identify whether it is necessary to shut off the water.

3. When Municipal Water Service Is Scheduled
Municipal service in response to bursting pipes or other major water damage may also require turning off the main valve. This valve is typically located between where water pipes enter a structure and the water meter. A special T-wrench may be necessary to shut off an outdoor water main shutoff valve, which could make it necessary to contact the water company.
Bursting pipes or other plumbing problems may require temporarily shutting off the water supply to a building in Canandaigua NY. In the event of water damage, it may also be necessary to access an outdoor shutoff for a commercial structure. Structures supplied by private wells should be shut off at the pump.

Having a water damage in your business is a very stressful situation. Many things can go through your mind, but how do you know if it is an emergency?

When it's your property under water, it is an emergency!  The longer that water sits, the more possibility there is that secondary damage will occur. Water can seep into wall crevices and down through the floors below. If it is not cleaned up and dried out properly, then the potential for mold growth is high.

If you walk in and see water pouring into your business, step 1 is to find the main water shutoff, and to shut off the water.

Also be very aware of these other things that may be affected and could be a potential hazard, such as the Electricity supply, Gas supply, Water damaged electrical appliances, Contaminated water (gasoline, chemicals, etc.) or Structural damage.

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial Carpet Maintenance

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

The carpeting in an office can quickly become soiled due to heavy traffic. Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair and other soils into the fibers to the carpeting. The IICRC believes that soil in carpet is 79% dry soil. Therefore, regular vacuuming is a major factor in keeping up with proper care and maintenance of your carpets. Vacuuming should be done at least once a week. However, in high traffic areas it may be necessary to vacuum once daily.

Other things you can do to help maintain your carpets appearance are…

  • Spot removal. Don’t wait until your whole carpet needs to be cleaned to try to remove a stain or spill from the carpet. Take care of any staining that may occur on the carpet immediately.
  • Move furniture to change traffic patterns. If everyone at your office walks in the same path on the carpet, the carpet will quickly show warn spots in those areas. Those same areas will receive the most amounts of dirt and soil on them while other areas never get walked on. Moving furniture around forces people to walk in different areas of the carpet preventing the carpeting to get worn too quickly in the same areas.
  • Using entryway mats. Using entryway mats limit the amount of soil brought in and tracked onto the carpets. Entryway mats are especially useful during the winter months when salt from the roads and sidewalks can stain the carpeting.
  • Schedule a professional cleaning. Professional carpet cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil in your carpets. We generally recommend having your carpets professionally cleaned at least every 12 months. However, we may suggest having your carpets cleaning more frequently based on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting.

Electrical Safety Tips!

10/2/2019 (Permalink)

In the past year, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua has seen numerous electrical fires. One fire in Victor was caused by a cell phone charger and the entire single-family home burned to the ground.

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua recommends the following tips to make sure you are protected:

  1. Electrical Extension Cords. If you have tenants regularly using extension cords, you may need additional outlets installed in some units. Extension cords are always meant to be a short-term solution.
  2. Tamper Resistant Outlets. Install tamper resistant outlets for day care centers or schools to ensure no one gets shocked or no inappropriate objects are put into outlets.
  3. GFCI Outlets. Inspect GFCI outlets to reduce risk of electrical shock to your tenants. National Code requires them in all kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas.
  4. Panel and AFCI Receptacles. Be sure to inspect your electrical panels and AFCI receptacles. Both works to ensure safe conditions if an arc fault is detected. An arc fault is when damaged wiring or a device creates a hot or unsafe situation.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. When various materials burn, the soot and residue they create differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage restoration. Learn more about our fire damage restoration process.

  • Emergency Contact
  • Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
  • Immediate Board-Up and Roof Tarp Service (if needed)
  • Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
  • Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces
  • Cleaning and Repair
  • Restoration

Preventing Water Damage During Business Closures

10/1/2019 (Permalink)

There are plenty of reason you might need to close your business in Atlanta, GA. When you're away, your site might be at risk for catastrophic flood damage. Water pipe repair is costly, so consider doing some preventative work if:
• You operate seasonally
• You were recently the victim of a fire or other premises damage
• Your location was shut down by legal authorities
• You're moving to a different location and selling your former property
• You temporarily suspended operations for an update or remodel

Regardless of the reason you decide to shutter your shop, the last thing you want is to come back to a disaster area. Here are a few steps that could prevent water damage while you and your staff are elsewhere.

Keep Your Equipment Working

One of the easiest ways you can safeguard your location against water damage is by maintaining your flood control equipment. Sump pumps are by far the most common water management tools, so check your pump batteries and ensure proper mechanical operation before you leave for any amount of time.

Close the Valves

You could also shut off your main water control. It's always a good idea to be familiar with these control valves: Quick reactions to a broken pipe can save hundreds of dollars in water pipe repair costs down the road.

Insulate

Insulation is usually considered as prevention against freezing. However, you might be able to get something out of insulating your pipes even if you aren't afraid of them bursting. A little bit of insulation could control minor leaks, protecting sensitive equipment or interior finishes.

It's relatively easy to make sure you have a clean and dry site to come back to, not a flooded one. These are not steps you want to perform every time you leave. However, if you are planning on being gone for more than a few days, these simple processes could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars on cleanup and water pipe repair.

Mold in your Business

9/29/2019 (Permalink)

  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Burbank for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.

Commercial Duct Cleaning

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

  • The process begins by using patented equipment, including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts tot he duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of particles in the air-stream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

Commercial Large Loss

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

A water main break on Sunday caused this commercial building to have a major flood.  This affected their main store area, kitchen,  cafeteria, and a few offices.  The water and dirt brought in from outside left a lot of damage to their business.

SERVPRO of North East Monroe County was called on Monday to help clean up the mess.  And the business owners were very glad they were able to save their merchandise from any further damage.  They couldn't believe we were able to respond so quickly and with a large amount of drying equipment. Our customer was thrilled with the results.

SERVPRO of N.E. Monroe County was able to make it "Like it never even happened" and they were fully operational within the same week as the loss.

SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile

9/6/2017 (Permalink)

It is estimated that up to 50% of businesses that close due to a disaster, such as a fire or a flood, never reopen! Of the businesses that survive, the overwhelming majority of them had a preparedness plan in place. Pre-planing can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind. Preparation is a key component for making it through and size disaster, whether it's a small water leak, a large fire, or an area flood. The best time to plan for such events is not when the event happened, but well before it happens.

By developing a SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile for your business, you minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action. Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water and fire damage can affect your business.

No one ever plans on a disaster, but you can plan for it. Now is the time to ask yourself "Are you ready for whatever happens?"
