Big Box Bathroom

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Contaminated Toilet This is just one area of a large bathroom that was completely affected by CAT 3 water.

Having to go to the bathroom in a public place sometimes can be uncomfortable.  Some people are very comfortable with it, while others cannot do it at all.  I am somewhere in the middle, I am comfortable with a public bathroom as long as it is properly maintained.

When you're shopping at a store, you can usually expect the bathrooms to be relatively cleaned.  Most places have policies in place to make sure that their facilities are cleaned regularly.  That being said, you cannot expect a teenager working at a big box store to clean up a CAT 3 sewage loss.  That's when you call in the big guns.

Early on a Friday morning, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was called to a local strip mall to clean up a sewage back-up in their bathroom.  Upon arrival, the crew found contaminated water in multiple bathrooms and a break room.  They wasted no time treating, steam cleaning, scrubbing, and disinfecting everything the water touched.  This ensured that the next person in that bathroom would not have to worry about an odor or getting dirty!

The store was able to open a few hours later, and they were grateful that SERVPRO was there to save the day!

7ft of Water is WHERE!?

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Water Line The water was so high in this basement that it was "kissing" the rafters overhead!

A burst water supply line coupled with a sump pump failure is a recipe for A LOT of water. Over 7ft of water, to be exact.  When SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua responded to this home, there was so much water that the fire department had to get involved.  Once it was pumped out, the real drying process began.

The water line was so high on the block wall (check out the picture!) that our technicians had to stand on a step-ladder to measure it.  As you can imagine, everything in the basement was affected including shelving, boxes of contents, the HVAC unit, and the hot water tank.  There was over $15,000 worth of electrical work that had to be done to get power restored to the home.

Between contents, structural drying, utility work, and permitting - the price tag on this loss was very high.  Luckily for this home owner, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was there to get the water out of the basement, and drying things out in a timely manner!

A Spring Cleaning

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

In our opinion, there is nothing better than a deep cleaning of your basement/garage at the beginning of spring.  It's a tale as old as time, when the weather breaks we all pull out the dusty mattresses and dirty bins to give them a good scrubbing.  Being clean and organized is a great feeling.  Paired with sunshine, birds chirping, and flowers blooming is an exceptional feeling!

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua loves helping with the spring cleaning projects.  We do everything from scrubbing the basement walls to vacuuming the garage ceiling, getting all the cleaning detail work done that a home-owner doesn't like doing.  Using HEPA vacuums, big green steam cleaners, and large air movers and dehumidifiers to dry out the corners of the basement is our bread and butter!

We've even helped our neighbors move out old couches, tear up dusty carpeting to replace with brand new flooring, and scrubbed cabinets clean of food debris.  There isn't a cleaning job in your home that we have not done at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua.  We love a clean home as much as you do, and it makes us proud to be helping the community shine!

Van on Fire

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

Van on Fire! The garage was a total loss, but thankfully the home was saved!

In early 2021 a garage fire broke out in Walworth, NY!  Luckily, the home owners were able to get out of the house and get the fire department on-site in a timely manner.  The garage was a total loss, but the home was saved.  The fire was started after an accidental gas leak ignited in the garage.  As you can see in the picture, the fire spread to the entire garage and took the family van with it.

It is important to know what your plan of action is in a fire.  Having a conversation with all family members and people living in the home is the first step.  When a fire breaks out, where are your points of exit?   Does everyone know where the fire extinguishers are?  Answering these questions BEFORE the emergency is key to minimizing loss.

Beyond that, knowing what chemicals are in your storage areas is important as well.  A lot of different products are flammable, and should be kept in a place that does not compromise the rest of your home.  A small step like this can go a long way to making sure you are not at risk of having an uncontrolled fire in your home!

Master Bathroom Mayhem

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

What could be worse than waking up suddenly at 4am on a Saturday?  Stepping down from your bed to find your carpet soaked, that's what!  Our latest adventure in water damage happened in Geneva NY, when an unsuspecting customer found out the hard way what happens when a pipe bursts in the Master Bathroom!

Luckily, she knew just who to call - SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua.  As we are just a stones throw away from the beautiful city of Geneva, NY!  4 hours after her call, we had pulled up all the affected carpeting, detached base trim, and made sure her home was drying out effectively.  The damage, unfortunately, was not contained to the master bathroom/bedroom.  Water had flowed through the ceiling into the kitchen, as well as the finished basement.

All in all, she was lucky enough to have been home when this happened.  Her quick actions calling in SERVPRO coupled with our expertise in water mitigation had her home secured and drying in a matter of hours!

Emergency Department Flood

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

Our on call team headed out to the loss site immediately to stabilize the environment.  We take great pride in having the knowledge of how to effectively and safely dry-out commercial structures.  There are many moving pieces to commercial losses including knowing the entrance points, understanding how work flow cannot be interrupted during mitigation, and managing multiple contact personnel.

Wet Business

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Equipment Professional placed air movers and dehumidifiers are the only way to properly dry out a wet structure.

A leaking pipe over a holiday weekend can prove to be a disaster for a business.  Unlike a residential space, businesses don't usually have someone around 24/7 to notice when damaging has occurred.

When the providers came in the morning after the holiday, they were surprised by the amount of standing water and damage that had occurred.  SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua responded immediately to clean up the aftermath! The picture shows a fraction of the drying equipment used to dry out the sopping wet structure.

The office didn't skip a beat, and every achy tooth on the schedule was handled without interruption!

Would You Rather

4/30/2021 (Permalink)

Would you rather have:  A fire in the attic or water in the basement?

Answer: A fire in the attic means that the fire department is involved.  They are good at putting out fires using WATER.  That means if there is a fire in the attic, there is water in a lot of other places in your home.  Water in the basement is generally a normal occurrence, and can be taken care of quickly.

When To Shut Off the Water at a Commercial Building

12/12/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial building owners and managers may need to shut off the main water supply for several reasons. Bursting pipes and plumbing work in or around a structure may necessitate turning off the flow of water through the pipes of a structure for a temporary period of time. Find out more about three scenarios in which it could be necessary to turn off a building’s water.

1. When A Supply Line Breaks
Shutting off the water supply is the most effective way to limit damage until a broken line can be fixed. While the water that remains in a pipe at the time of shutoff will still leak, the flow will be slower and soon come to a stop. Collecting leaking water in containers may enable a business or commercial property owner to reduce the amount of cleanup and restoration necessary.

2. During Plumbing Maintenance or Repairs
A plumber can fix broken pipe and inspect plumbing before turning the water in a structure back on. If a pipe has not necessitated emergency maintenance, a licensed plumbing professional can identify whether it is necessary to shut off the water.

3. When Municipal Water Service Is Scheduled
Municipal service in response to bursting pipes or other major water damage may also require turning off the main valve. This valve is typically located between where water pipes enter a structure and the water meter. A special T-wrench may be necessary to shut off an outdoor water main shutoff valve, which could make it necessary to contact the water company.
Bursting pipes or other plumbing problems may require temporarily shutting off the water supply to a building in Canandaigua NY. In the event of water damage, it may also be necessary to access an outdoor shutoff for a commercial structure. Structures supplied by private wells should be shut off at the pump.

When it's your property under water, it is an emergency!  The longer that water sits, the more possibility there is that secondary damage will occur. Water can seep into wall crevices and down through the floors below. If it is not cleaned up and dried out properly, then the potential for mold growth is high.

If you walk in and see water pouring into your business, step 1 is to find the main water shutoff, and to shut off the water.

Also be very aware of these other things that may be affected and could be a potential hazard, such as the Electricity supply, Gas supply, Water damaged electrical appliances, Contaminated water (gasoline, chemicals, etc.) or Structural damage.

Cleaning Up After a Fire Loss

Kitchen with Fire Damage Fire Loss in Canandaigua, NY

When our first responders put out a fire, a substantial amount of water is used to quench the flames. All of that water ends up seeping into the home and in addition to the damage already caused by the fire, water damage also begins to take place. While some home fires are contained to a small area of the home, the water used to put out the fire ends up spreading throughout the rest of the structure. Unaddressed water damage can lead to mold growth, added structural instability caused by wood rot, and a chain of problems following that would otherwise be considered unrelated.

As the crews of SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua begin the restoration process on your home, the first thing we want to address is the water damage. By doing this, we make sure that the water damage doesn’t further compromise the structure.

We understand the stress that is caused by a house fire. And we are trained on how to handle them. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is here to help you restore your property after such a loss.  Call us today (585) 393-0310

Trauma Cleanup Specialists

12/8/2020 (Permalink)

When a significant traumatic event takes place in your home or business, the area needs to be thoroughly disinfected and cleaned in the shortest time possible. Here are a few reasons why it is crucial to address the cleanup of the situation as soon as possible.

Pathogens can spread fast – After an event that involves significant blood or bodily fluid loss, the risk of blood borne infectious pathogens is very high. Proper trauma cleanup removes all pathogens from the area, cleans the air and neutralizes the risk of spreading it further.

Replacement of fabrics and affected surfaces –Many times, furniture and other surfaces may be stained with fluids and will need replacement. A professional trauma cleaning specialist will be able to ascertain what surfaces can be restored and what surfaces will need replacing, depending on the severity of the event.

Emotional Recovery- Often times, traumatic events that require calling on the services of a professional are devastating to the residents of the home. If it involved the death of a pet or a loved one, returning to the site of the event will be a very negative emotional experience. A thorough professional cleaning of the area will begin the road to recovery for all affected parties. It is also far easier for a professional team who is emotionally detached from the event to complete the cleaning process.

Our technicians follow OSHA and EPA protocols to help transform an unsafe environment back into a clean, safe home or business. Our first focus is always safety. We will always treat your property and those in grieving with the greatest empathy and respect in the face of trying circumstances. Our team of IICRC certified professionals are prepared to help you and your family on the road to recovery. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is always here to help, 24/7. (585) 393-0310

What to do After a House Fire

12/7/2020 (Permalink)

After a house fire, knowing what to do after doesn’t come instinctively to most people. Of course fire and smoke damage restoration comes to mind, but there are things that need to be done before. Moving on after a house fire may seem impossible, but it doesn’t need to be. Understanding where to begin and the resources available to help you is crucial to putting your life back together.

What To Do After a House Fire

Contact a family member or a close friend to inform them of what happened. They may be able to help you find a place to stay as well. Staying in your home anytime before a home restoration, after the fire is not safe. You can also reach out to the local disaster relief agency’s, like the Red Cross or Salvation Army.

Call your Insurance agent. Begin your claim as soon as possible so that your immediate needs can be met. Your agent should also help to secure your property in addition to recommending a home restoration after the fire company, like SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua. The “Loss of Use” fund from your insurance policy can be used towards your daily living expenses and basic necessities. Keep all your receipts and a detailed record of all your purchases.

If and when you do plan on going back into the home for any reason, be sure to confirm the go ahead from the fire department officials. When given the green light to enter, another thing to do after a house fire is to take pictures and even videos of the damages. You’ll want these to support your claim. You had a house fire, what to do next involves taking inventory of everything affected after the house fire

Home Restoration After the Fire

Home restoration after the fire is your top priority. Reaching out to your trusted fire and restoration company, like SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua to help mitigate early on leading to any reconstruction that may need to be done.

Fire Alarms in your Home

12/6/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.

SAFETY TIPS

• Install smoke alarms in every bedroom. They should also be outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement.

• Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.

• It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.

• Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.

• Current alarms on the market employ different types of technology including multi-sensing, which could include smoke and carbon monoxide combined.

• Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.

• A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove.

• People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.

• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Facts

  • A closed-door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level. Smoke alarms should be connected so when one sounds, they all sound. Most homes do not have this level of protection.
  • Roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Ways to Prevent Water Damage

12/5/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua specializes in the cleanup and remediation of water damage.

So, as you might expect, we’ve seen some of the worst possible water damage, from burst water heaters to ruptured pipes to actual flooding.

What’s remarkable about many cases of water damage is that, often, the damage could have been prevented with proper maintenance. This is something that many home and business owners simply do not know, which is why we’re dedicating this week’s blog post to the basic maintenance you can do to prevent water damage to your home or commercial building.

[Note: Please keep in mind that these tips are not provided as guarantees against water damage, and every property is going to differ when it comes to maintenance best practices.]

#1: Disconnect garden hoses, especially during the Fall and winter months.

We see this a lot: when hoses are left attached to a water source, the standing water within them can often freeze. When this happens, the freezing water expands, and the ice blockage travels inside the building, sometimes causing pipe bursts and subsequent water damage to the property.

This can happen even when the interior temperature of the building is significantly higher than the outside temperature. As a general rule, disconnect all hoses from their spigots when they’re not in use.

#2: Perform quarterly inspections of all water-using appliances.

Every few months, make it a point to inspect the operational condition of the appliances in your home or office. Pay extra attention to the connections between the appliance and the water supply, looking for leaks, corrosion, or loose fittings.

If your dishwasher, water heater, clothes washer, or other water-using appliance is in need of repair or replacement, doing so sooner than later can help protect you from costly water damage down the line.

#3: Consider installing water detection devices.

Small, battery-powered devices that detect moisture can be installed near water heaters, toilets, and other appliances. They will emit an alarm when moisture levels reach a certain threshold, giving you the opportunity to get ahead of leaks and overflows before they cause serious damage.

Installing these devices may be overkill for smaller homes, but for those with numerous water-carrying appliances, they can offer much-needed peace of mind.

#4: Unblock gutters, downspouts, and other external water routing hardware.

It’s tempting to let debris-filled gutters go unattended for months or even years. However, doing so could be setting you up for water damage.

When the water routing system on your roof isn’t functioning effectively, spillover can wreak havoc on the ground below. Standing water begins to accumulate, and before long, water intrusion starts taking its toll.

Also, blocked gutters can cause water to collect on the roof. This pooling can freeze in the colder months, causing expansion that can burst gutters and downspouts, causing potentially thousands in damage.

To address this, inspect your gutters, downspouts and other water runoff routing hardware for signs of blockages, and clear them away on a regular basis.

#5: Take a water pressure reading.

Most residential and commercial buildings have adequate water pressure regulation, but this isn’t always the case.

Having exceptionally high water pressure puts a lot of strain on the pipes and valves that are integral to the water transmission system within your home or commercial building. This strain can cause leaking and bursting without any warning whatsoever.

To take a water pressure reading, buy a water pressure gauge at your local hardware store, install it onto an external water spigot, and then turn the water on to maximum flow. If the water pressure reading exceeds 100 PSI, you’re going to want to install a water pressure regulator (also available at most hardware stores).

#6: Keep tabs on your water use by checking your bill for spikes.

If your home or commercial building uses a ‘normal’ amount of water most months and then, suddenly, you notice your water bill spike, there could be a leak somewhere.

Surprise water leaks can be insidious, not to mention very costly. Not only are you paying for the wasted water, but it’s possible the water being wasted is also causing damage to the building. If you suspect this is happening, put on your detective hat and try to get to the source of the mystery water leak.

Is the Damage Already Done? Contact SERVPRO.

If your home or commercial building has already been marred by water damage, then it’s time to take action to remediate it. That’s why your local SERVPRO is available, 24 hours a day, to assess water damage and take the necessary steps to repair it.

Classification of Water Damage in your Home

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

In this post, we will be explaining some of the basics of water damage and how it can affect your home and health. Water damage is the leading culprit when it comes to property damage and restoration service needs.

Now, this actually surprises a lot of folks, when they hear water damage they usually imagine a flood from a nearby river, a natural disaster, etc. While events as such do occur, there are more common ways for water damage to affect your home, including:

  • appliance leaks from your fridge, ice machine, washing machines, etc.
  • toilet overflows
  • sinks and bath/shower overflows or left running without attendance
  • broken/leaky water pipes within walls and ceilings
  • drainage issues around the property
  • roof leaks and compromised exterior
  • rain/wind storms

As you can see, water damage can originate from either internal or external sources and once it gets into your home it is important to know what kind of water you are dealing with.

What do we mean by what kind of water? Well in the restoration industry we recognize water in THREE different categories:

  • CATEGORY 1 – Also referred to as “Clean Water”, this means that the water originated from a sanitary source and does not generally pose a risk to our health.
  • CATEGORY 2 – This could also be referred to as “Grey Water”, meaning it contains some contamination and would not be sanitary enough for human consumption, posing a health risk if ingested.
  • CATEGORY 3 – Commonly known as “Black Water”, this is water that is grossly contaminated and could contain disease-causing organisms, pathogens, and other harmful materials.

Now you know the 3 different categories of water and how it can enter into your home. Each of these different categories of water damage comes with their own do's and don'ts on how to deal with them. Restoration professionals like SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua have advanced training and expertise, not to mention a tremendous amount of hands-on experience to handle any water damage emergency

Dealing with Storm Damage to your Property

12/3/2020 (Permalink)

Dealing with repairs and insurance companies after severe weather hits your property can be difficult. Homeowners can use the following tips to help tackle the storm damage caused by hard rains, flooding, or storm-related issues.

SAFETY FIRST

If you and your family were away from home when the storm hit, do not return until it has been confirmed safe. Contact a storm damage expert like SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua; we’ll help you determine if your home is safe to return to.

INSURANCE

You will need to contact your homeowners’ insurance adjuster as soon as possible. If your neighborhood has sustained widespread damage, find out if any special teams of insurance agents, relief workers, or contractors are coming to the area. Check your policy to find out what actions you need to take or talk to your agent to make sure you are following the proper procedures. Not following these actions correctly could result in a reduced claim. Inspect your property and make a list of all damages; take photographs of all noted damage if at all possible.

RECORDING AND DOCUMENTING

Document your neighbor’s damages, as well; this can prevent the insurance provider from downgrading your claim by saying the damage is from your neglect of maintenance or other unrelated issues by giving them a way to compare. Keep a record of all the communication you have with your insurance provider, and don’t do any unnecessary repair work yourself. Hire a trusted storm damage restoration service provider such as SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua to handle any repairs.

BE SCAM FREE

Always check the adjuster’s identification. If you are evacuated, ask for money from your claim upfront. If they agree, you will be given a check for an amount that will be deducted from your final settlement. Some providers will automatically offer a partial payment early on during the process. Review it carefully and decline it if you feel uncomfortable with any part of it. Never be afraid to ask questions and to expect an answer that makes sense or seems fair.

Dealing with a storm's aftermath is stressful, but reacting properly will be an immense help and can prevent problems down the road.

Moisture Control is Key to Prevent Mold

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold can grow on virtually any type of substance as long as moisture, water, oxygen, and an organic source are present. They can gradually damage building materials and furnishings if left unchecked and cause structural damage to a wood-framed building, weakening floors and walls.

Mold needs moisture to grow, so it’s important to prevent excess moisture. Moisture problems in buildings can be linked to leaky pipes, roof damage, landscaping or gutters that direct water into or under a building, or an unvented combustion appliance. Even delayed, improper or insufficient maintenance of HVAC systems can result in elevated humidity levels inside a building.

Moisture control is the key to control mold, so any initial water infiltration should be stopped and cleaned promptly. A quick response (within 24-48 hours), thorough clean-up, and removal of damaged materials prevent and limit mold growth. Simply killing the mold is not enough. Since the chemicals and proteins are present even in dead mold, it’s essential that the mold be removed.

Luckily, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is your trusted and certified mold remediation specialist! Give us a call for a free estimate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! (585) 393-0310

Are you prepared for a Winter Storm?

11/30/2020 (Permalink)

11/28/2020 - Future Scheduled Date

The dreaded time of year for most is coming. The most extreme winter storms bring snow, ice, sleet, as well as strong winds and frigid temperatures. This is nothing new to those who live in Canandaigua and Western New York. Winter comes quick and it’s time to prepare for a storm. To improve your safety in your home during a winter storm, you should make several preparations:

  • Create an emergency kit. You will need a home kit that’s stocked for at least three days in case of a power outage. This includes necessary items such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, blankets, and first-aid supplies.
  • Insulate your home. Install storm windows and shutters, and insulate your attic and walls to keep the cold air out. Weather-stripping doors and cover windows with plastic from the inside for extra insulation.
  • Shield your pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting. If your home is left unattended, leave the heat on to a temperature of at least 55° F to prevent frozen pipes.
  • Protect your heating equipment. Have your furnace, wood stove or fireplace inspected and cleaned every year to assure they are working properly.
  • Know how to shut off utilities. Should you need to vacate your home due to flooding, you will need to shut off utilities. Learn how to shut off natural gas, electricity, and water supplies in your home.

Winter storms are ruthless, even with extreme preparation, there is still damage that is unpreventable. Remember to call SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua at (585) 393-0310 for all of your storm damage needs. As always, we are Here to Help.

Storms can lead to a multitude of damage to your home or business. The overwhelming precipitation, wind speeds, and debris can expose weak points in construction like maintained gutters and downspouts.

The redirection of water off and away from your roof can help prevent roof leaks caused by pressure and/or accumulated water finding the path of least resistance into your home. Having downspout output spouts well connected and directing the water away from your structure’s foundation is also a very important as an already overwhelmed groundwater level around your home.

Checking to make sure that your sump pump is working properly is another great precaution before a storm. Sump pumps can often become unplugged by various tradesmen working in your basement looking for an electrical source to plug their equipment in. Become clogged with debris and animals over time and of course can have mechanical issues. A quick test of the sump pump in anticipation of heavy rains can prevent long on-hold times with the manufacturer and the anxiety of trying to prevent a water loss while time is limited.

Of course, with heavier storms it is always a good idea to have some plywood on hand to board up windows in preparation or as need. Flying debris during heavy winds can easily shatter windows, exposing your home to outside elements.

These are just a few tips for home and business owners, if you would like more helpful tips call SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua at (585) 393-0310

Steps to Avoid a Gas Fire

11/26/2020 (Permalink)

The smell of leaking gas is always a signal to you that there’s a hazard in your home. Natural gas can leak into your home and create the perfect atmosphere for a fire. If you notice the smell of gas, you need to do a few steps to ensure you don’t start a gas fire.

  1. Avoid Sparks

Gas is highly combustible. If you add a spark to the environment, you could set off a gas explosion. You can avoid sparks by keeping all the lights in the house turned off and only use flashlights.

  1. Start ventilation

Allowing the gas to escape can help you avoid a catastrophic gas fire. Open as many windows and doors as possible to air the gas out as best as possible.

  1. Turn off appliances

If you have a gas stove, furnace or dryer, you may be able to slow or stop the leak by turning off your appliances.

  1. Shut off the gas

If it’s possible and safe for you, find the gas meter and turn off the gas supply to the house.

  1. Leave

Safely evacuate your home and call emergency responders. They can safely find the root of the cause and make your home safe.

Smelling natural gas in your home can be scary. Taking smart, precautionary steps can help you avoid a gas fire and keep your entire family safe.

If a fire does occur, call SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua at (585) 393-0310 to make the restoration as stress-free as possible.

Deep Frying Turkey Safety

11/25/2020 (Permalink)

The holidays are always a special time to be with our family. We want to eat well and relax and enjoy the time. Every family has a tradition on who and how to cook their turkey. Everybody knows that it’s risky to fry their turkey, but to some its totally worth it. Just keep in mind that Thanksgiving is the biggest day of the year for house fires. Accidents happen, which is why it’s important to practice fire safety.

We put together some fire safety tips for deep frying your turkey with the help from FEMA below:

  • Keep outdoor fryers off of decks and a safe distance from your home and surrounding trees.
  • Make sure the turkey is completely thawed or it will cause hot water to splatter
  • Wear goggles to shield your eyes and mitts to cover your hands
  • Make sure your turkey fryer is on a level surface so it won’t tip over and spill hot oil

Most importantly, please cook with caution and be prepared. The holidays shouldn’t be spent scrambling to get out of your home safely. Always remember that SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is always here to help! You can reach us at (585) 393-0310.

What Causes Mold to Grow Inside Your Facility?

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

What to Do After Storm Damage

11/19/2020 (Permalink)

When storms wreak havoc on your property, you can immediately feel helpless and vulnerable. Anything from downed electrical wires to trees falling over can pose a major threat to the integrity of your home or commercial building.

Storm Damage can be one of the most dangerous and unpredictable attacks a property owner faces because the damage itself can create an unstable environment. This is why you need an experienced restoration company such as SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua to bring stability to a shaky scene.

Here are a few things to consider after the storm has passed:

  2. Make sure to keep clear of damaged buildings, power lines, and trees, as these can be dangerous.
  3. If you’re driving, beware of road hazards such as flooded areas, damaged roads, bridges, and debris.
  4. Storms are at best, scary, but at their worst, they are unpredictable and dangerous. Make sure to stay safe and away from any secondary storm damage.

Commercial Carpet Maintenance

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

The carpeting in an office can quickly become soiled due to heavy traffic. Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair and other soils into the fibers to the carpeting. The IICRC believes that soil in carpet is 79% dry soil. Therefore, regular vacuuming is a major factor in keeping up with proper care and maintenance of your carpets. Vacuuming should be done at least once a week. However, in high traffic areas it may be necessary to vacuum once daily.

Other things you can do to help maintain your carpets appearance are…

  • Spot removal. Don’t wait until your whole carpet needs to be cleaned to try to remove a stain or spill from the carpet. Take care of any staining that may occur on the carpet immediately.
  • Move furniture to change traffic patterns. If everyone at your office walks in the same path on the carpet, the carpet will quickly show warn spots in those areas. Those same areas will receive the most amounts of dirt and soil on them while other areas never get walked on. Moving furniture around forces people to walk in different areas of the carpet preventing the carpeting to get worn too quickly in the same areas.
  • Using entryway mats. Using entryway mats limit the amount of soil brought in and tracked onto the carpets. Entryway mats are especially useful during the winter months when salt from the roads and sidewalks can stain the carpeting.
  • Schedule a professional cleaning. Professional carpet cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil in your carpets. We generally recommend having your carpets professionally cleaned at least every 12 months. However, we may suggest having your carpets cleaning more frequently based on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting.

Call SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua today for professional carpet cleaning at (585) 393-0310

What to do in the Fall to Prevent Winter Water Damage

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

Winter weather can bring more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. As a homeowner in Canandaigua, NY it is important to prepare your home for winter. Common causes of winter water damage include leaks, burst pipes, and drainage issues. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to help prevent these issues from occurring in the cold winter months:

  1. Clean your gutters.

I know, I know. All home owners know this is an important but tedious task. When your gutters are clogged, this stops the outward flow of water that gets collected in your gutters. When water isn’t flowing out of your home, you can bet that it’s floating in. Thankfully, this is an easy issue to address.

  1. Protect your pipes from the cold.

Before the cold weather hits, we suggest insulating the pipes most susceptible to freezing. In order to properly insulate and keep cold air out, you can use heat tape to wrap around any spots that leak.

  1. Test your sump pump.

Before winter begins, check that your sump pump is still working correctly to keep your house dry from the wet season. You can do this yourself by slowly pouring a few gallons of water into the pit to assure that the pump turns on.

These are just a few tips to help you get your home ready for the winter months. If water damage does happen to you this winter, just know that SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is here to help at (585) 393-0310.

Drying Hardwood Floors after Water Damage in Victor

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Technicians Quickly Assess and Then Dry Out Your Home After Water Damage

Perhaps one of the most discouraging sights a Victor homeowner sees after excessive water enters living areas is damage to hardwood floors. Regardless of the source of the moisture, if enough is present, it eventually spreads across the floors of your home. Although properly installed and finished hardwood is resilient if the spill or leak is mopped up quickly, more extended exposure can swell and distort the organic fibers of the floor. We have strategies that prevent further damage and can ready the surface for restoration.

The source of water damage to your Victor hardwood floors can vary, from overflowing tubs and sinks, leaking aquariums, rain blown in an open window, plumbing fails in nearby walls or a host of other reasons. Vigilance on the part of the homeowner in cleaning up occasional spills and a call for professional help when a more significant water event occurs is critical. The faster our well-qualified water remediation crews respond, the more likely your hardwood floors recover successfully from water damage.

When we arrive, the crew chief assesses the situation, noting the ingress point of the water and the migration pattern of the moisture across the floor. SERVPRO uses sensitive moisture meters to map out the areas of damage and to establish a baseline as we determine the drying goals for the flooring. Hardwood typically lies over at least one type of subfloor which can contribute to unresolved and continuous water damage if we do not address its drying as well.

SERVPRO technicians employ extraction equipment always available on our service vehicles to remove standing water. We use pumps for water deeper than two inches, and truck-mounted wanded extractors for residual, non-absorbed moisture. After the surface is clear of water, we move to advanced technologies such as drying mats to remove the moisture saturated inside the planks and in the subfloor.

Drying mats permit multiple and customizable configurations best designed to remove the water fast in the areas targeted by our metered readings. Hoses concentrate pressurized air over panels adhered with an airtight seal on the water damaged expanses. The water from all flooring layers suctions out as the system works. SERVPRO employees train extensively on how to operate the drying mats, adjusting and adapting the configuration as the drying progresses.

Take advantage of our specialized floor drying equipment and the experience of our trained technicians at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua. Avoid the necessity of replacing expensive and beautiful hardwood floors after water damage with one call to (585) 393-0310.

Fall Weather can Trigger Allergies

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

When many people think of allergies, they think of springtime, but fall can be just as troublesome as the spring months. Here’s why as the days get shorter, your runny nose, itchy eyes and scratchy throat might worsen.

  1. Ragweed pollinates in the fall. The most common fall allergy is ragweed, a soft-stemmed weed that produces vast amounts of pollen – about a million grains per plant every day! These grains of pollen are so lightweight they can travel up to 400 miles on the wind. Ragweed pollinates from mid-August to October, depending on where you live. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, an estimated 10-20% of Americans suffer from ragweed allergies.
  2. Mold spores are released in the fall. If you are allergic to the spores of mold or other fungi, you likely experience symptoms in the fall. Molds can be found wherever there is moist, organic material.  Outdoors, they grow on plants, rotting logs and decaying leaves. Mold spores are released in the fall and spread through the air as crops are harvested and leaves fall to the ground.
  3. Unpredictable weather extends fall allergy seasons. Warm, dry weather that lasts longer than usual in the fall months allows ragweed pollen to linger and continue to cause symptoms. In areas that experience a wetter-than-normal fall, mold spores can circulate later into the season.
  4. Dry indoor air triggers allergy symptoms. As the temperature cools outside, people fire up their heating systems, leading to drier indoor air and increased circulation of dust and pollen. Low humidity inside a home can dry out people out and cause inflammation, triggering allergy symptoms. To prevent problems caused by dry air, aim for an indoor humidity level of 40-50%; use a hygrometer to monitor humidity levels.

Detecting the Water behind the scenes

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Moisture Meters (pictured) are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials.

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time that you may not be able to even see.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by your local SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals.

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and Moisture Meters (pictured) are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua can calculate and create an environment most conclusive to drying.
  • When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
  • Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach
  • Thermal Foggers (pictured) dispense solvent-based produces by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor causing particles.

What is the bottom line? SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua (585-393-0310) has the training and equipment to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Fire Prevention Week

10/4/2019 (Permalink)

October 6 – 12, 2019 is National Fire Prevention Week. Unfortunately, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua performs fire damage remediation and sees too many properties and lives go up in smoke. We urge you to take some time NOW to prepare.

The National Fire Protection Week 2019 Campaign is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” There are 4 planning tips to incorporate in your fire plan:

  1. Draw a map of your home and identify 2 ways to escape from every room.
  2. Test your fire alarms.
  3. Establish a safe meeting place outside.
  4. Post the plan in your home.

In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. For more information on Fire Prevention Week, visit www.nfpa.org.

In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

What to do Immediately after a House Fire

10/3/2019 (Permalink)

Fires can be devastating! Know what to do!
  1. Ask whether it is safe to enter the home. Do not enter if the fire authorities deem it unsafe. They may establish a safety zone, but never assume a room is safe, until it has been cleared to enter.
  2. Know who to call.
    1. Contact family members and let them know you are safe, and unharmed.
    2. Contact your insurance agent. They will be able to talk you through the necessary steps, including proper documentation and emergency lodging and living expenses (keep all of your receipts!) The insurance company may assist in securing a company to help with clean up options.
    3. You may request SERVPRO at this time for contents cleaning, restoration etc. Contact
    4. Another call may be to your landlord if applicable, and to your local American Red Cross. SERVPRO is the preferred restoration partner to The American Red Cross.
  3. Secure the property to prevent possible looting. SERVPRO is available to assist with securing property/ Board Ups.
  4. If water hoses were used to exterminate the fire, drying your home is critical. It is best to call the professionals at SERVPRO to do water/ fire cleanups. Water can lead to mold damage if not dried properly. SERVPRO is an approved restoration contractor for many major insurance carriers and adheres to the highest standards in the restoration industry.
  5. Seek counseling if needed. Children and adults can feel a traumatic sense of loss, and may need help to avoid a lasting sense of sadness and disorientation after a house fire. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. A house fire is a traumatic event and individuals need to be treated with respect and compassion by those close to the process of rebuilding.

Electrical Safety Tips!

10/2/2019 (Permalink)

In the past year, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua has seen numerous electrical fires. One fire in Victor was caused by a cell phone charger and the entire single-family home burned to the ground.

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua recommends the following tips to make sure you are protected:

  1. Electrical Extension Cords. If you have tenants regularly using extension cords, you may need additional outlets installed in some units. Extension cords are always meant to be a short-term solution.
  2. Tamper Resistant Outlets. Install tamper resistant outlets for day care centers or schools to ensure no one gets shocked or no inappropriate objects are put into outlets.
  3. GFCI Outlets. Inspect GFCI outlets to reduce risk of electrical shock to your tenants. National Code requires them in all kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas.
  4. Panel and AFCI Receptacles. Be sure to inspect your electrical panels and AFCI receptacles. Both works to ensure safe conditions if an arc fault is detected. An arc fault is when damaged wiring or a device creates a hot or unsafe situation.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. When various materials burn, the soot and residue they create differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage restoration. Learn more about our fire damage restoration process.

  • Emergency Contact
  • Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
  • Immediate Board-Up and Roof Tarp Service (if needed)
  • Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
  • Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

Preventing Water Damage During Business Closures

10/1/2019 (Permalink)

There are plenty of reason you might need to close your business in Atlanta, GA. When you're away, your site might be at risk for catastrophic flood damage. Water pipe repair is costly, so consider doing some preventative work if:
• You operate seasonally
• You were recently the victim of a fire or other premises damage
• Your location was shut down by legal authorities
• You're moving to a different location and selling your former property
• You temporarily suspended operations for an update or remodel

Regardless of the reason you decide to shutter your shop, the last thing you want is to come back to a disaster area. Here are a few steps that could prevent water damage while you and your staff are elsewhere.

Keep Your Equipment Working

One of the easiest ways you can safeguard your location against water damage is by maintaining your flood control equipment. Sump pumps are by far the most common water management tools, so check your pump batteries and ensure proper mechanical operation before you leave for any amount of time.

Close the Valves

You could also shut off your main water control. It's always a good idea to be familiar with these control valves: Quick reactions to a broken pipe can save hundreds of dollars in water pipe repair costs down the road.

Insulate

Insulation is usually considered as prevention against freezing. However, you might be able to get something out of insulating your pipes even if you aren't afraid of them bursting. A little bit of insulation could control minor leaks, protecting sensitive equipment or interior finishes.

It's relatively easy to make sure you have a clean and dry site to come back to, not a flooded one. These are not steps you want to perform every time you leave. However, if you are planning on being gone for more than a few days, these simple processes could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars on cleanup and water pipe repair.

Whether its damage caused by a leaky water pipe or an earthquake of catastrophic magnitudes, there’s no such thing as a job too big that SERVPRO can’t handle!

The days immediately following a major storm event, such as area-wide flooding, are critical to prevent secondary damages, like mold. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua suggests the following steps to help minimize additional damage to your property.

  • If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.
  • Take the greatest caution while entering your home, and wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing when dealing with flooded areas.
  • Do not attempt to operate any electrical equipment while standing in wet or damp locations.
  • Throw away all foods - even canned goods - that have come into contact with flood waters.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and pillow cushions for drying. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Place fans at 45-degree angles to walls and move large furniture away from walls to create the best air circulation.
  • If your home has a crawlspace, be aware excess moisture in this area can often foster mold growth.

"The first 24 hours after a water damage or flood are so crucial to keeping final costs of the damage down," said Don Turner, Director of SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team. "A lot of flood situations require professional equipment and knowledge of the science of drying to mitigate. By taking these steps, property owners can help minimize damage until the professionals arrive."

Mold in your Business

9/29/2019 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your business. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your business.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Burbank for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

About Our Mold Remediation Services

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua specializes in mold cleanup and restoration; in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Flood Preparation Tips

9/26/2019 (Permalink)

Before the Flood:

  • Have a qualified professional elevate the furnace, water heater, and electric panel if susceptible to flooding.
  • Install "check valves" in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up into the drain of your home or business.
  • Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to help avoid seepage.

During the Flood:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances.
  • So not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of water can make you fall.

After the Flood:

  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community's water supply is safe to drink.
  • Avoid floodwaters, these waters may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

The Hazards of Water Damage

9/24/2019 (Permalink)

We’ve been getting a lot of calls about water damages lately. We here at SERVPRO know that there can a lot of questions that come along with discovering a water damage in your home, especially when it comes to your health and potential health hazards when a loss is discovered. Our friends over at SERVPRO of Saginaw put together some great thoughts on the topic. Read on to gain insight on what hazards can occur as a result of a water damage and why it’s best to let the professionals handle the clean up.

The obvious result of water damage is structural---whether severe or cosmetic. And unfortunately, structural damage can wind up costing you thousands of dollars in repairs. The result of water damage can also cause the growth of toxic mold and mildew. If left untreated, this mold proliferation can be cause health effects. So let’s get to it.

Hazard #1: Mold Growth -

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), you should have your property dried and cleaned within 24-48 hours after the initial water onslaught. This practice will help decrease the likelihood of mold growth. Although you may be capable of starting the drying and cleaning processes, it is important to know that mold can grow in areas of the home that you can't see. Thus, simply cleaning and drying your carpet will not always be effective in preventing mold growth, especially if there is a large quantity of unwanted water. The mold can still grow in different areas of your home, including the carpet padding, underneath wallpaper, behind the drywall, along ceilings and baseboards, in voids and furniture.

As noted by the EPA, there are several health hazards that can result from exposure to mold. It is also important to note that the mold clean up process, performed by you, can lead to exposure to fungi. For this reason, professional water damage restoration technicians from SERVPRO will wear special protective gear and utilize state-of-the-art equipment for mold cleanup and the prevention of mold dispersion throughout your Saginaw home.

Hazard #2: Exposure to Sewage -

Exposure to raw sewage is dangerous because it contains parasites, viruses, and bacteria such as E. coli. The sewage can also contain pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and pesticides. The EPA has stated that contaminated water can lead to the contraction of illnesses such as tuberculosis, dysentery, hepatitis, tetanus, and cholera. Safely stay away from the hazard of sewage water--blackwater--and let the experts execute the cleanup and dry out.

So… Let The Professionals at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua Assist You!

We are passionate about helping our customers make their water damage loss “Like it never even happened.” So no matter if it’s a leaky pipe underneath your bathroom sink or a busted water main that’s flooded your entire property, our team will get you taken care of so you can get back to a safe and HEALTHY state.

Emergency Storm Kits

9/24/2019 (Permalink)

When a storm hits, sometimes it takes you by surprise. You may not have the immediate chance to grab what you need or even have it on hand at all. That is why it is so important to have a Storm Supply Kit ready to go.

A Storm Supply Kit could be described as a pre-chosen group of supplies that could assist with health and safety during or after a storm or disaster.

It would be ideal to keep a Storm Supply Kit at home, work , and in your vehicle. Here are the top 10 things that should be apart of your storm kit.

  • Water: of course an obvious choice but just think about the amount of water a human body actually needs. On average a single person drinks a gallon of water a day and you should have 3 days worth of water.
  • Food: of course another obvious choice but another major necessity for surviving. Again keep in mind the amount of food necessary. Experts say to have at least 3 days worth of non perishable foods
  • First Aid Kit: A first aid kit is an extra very important thing to have and you should always have on hand!
  • Flashlight: With the flashlight comes the necessity of having extra batteries in case some of them die.
  • Pocket knife
  • Matches: Make sure you store your matches in a waterproof container to prevent them getting wet.
  • Needed Prescription Medication: Make sure you have any vital prescription medication you need to survive.
  • Whistles or Signal for Help: Make sure you have the means if signalling for help if it ever becomes a need.
  • Sanitation Wipes and any hygiene products: Just the stuff you would want to try to keep yourself in a clean state.
  • Sleeping bag and/or blankets: In case of a major disaster you would want the means of staying warm/something to sleep with.

We have the Equipment!

9/18/2019 (Permalink)

The Hydroxyl Generator (or more commonly known as ‘Titan’) is one of the most scientifically-advanced pieces of equipment we use to combat odors due to bio hazard, fire or water damage events.

The main benefit of using a true hydroxyl generator is that they are safe to use in occupied areas for deodorization purposes. For any businesses, they love this machine because it means less out of pocket expenses and henceforth, less business disruption!

These generators have been successfully tested on any restoration features that SERVPRO specializes in including protein fires, floods, dead body situations, skunk odors, pet urine odors, musty odors and many types of odors. An important note: the Titan is NOT intended for mold use.

Here’s a rundown of some additional facts in order to give you the inside scoop, should you ever need to reach out to us for smoke/soot deodorization needs:

When to Use:

  • When odors, gases and organic pollutants are needed to be remediated

 Applications:

  • Use on fire and flood damage restoration jobs
  • Use to destroy odors from cigarette smoke, dead body, urine, garbage, airborne VOCs and more

Tips:

  • Always remove the source of the odor before operation
  • For optimum performance, a 60%+ humidity level is best. If needed, place a bucket of water or a wet towel behind the machine to allow more moisture to be pulled into the air stream.
  • Use air movers to circulate the air for thorough air cleaning.
  • Although purifying an area depends on many variables, a general time guide for purifying a 1,000 cubic foot area with light to moderator odor is 1 to 3 hours.

As always feel free to reach out to SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua at any time for more information on pieces of restoration hardware. We have helpful staff willing to explain further any of our services – (585) 393-0310

Soot & Smoke

9/18/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Burbank will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Homeowner Electrical Safety: Fire Prevention

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

According to data from the NFPA, fire departments responded to an average of 45,000 home fires caused by electrical failure or malfunction every year between 2010-2014. In fact, home electrical fires are the most common fire in a home accounting for nearly 60% of all fires.

While you can’t prevent all electrical fires from occurring, there are a lot of things you can do to reduce the risk of an electrical fire from happening at your Victor home. Below the NFPA will cover some electrical safety tips you can follow that may help prevent an electrical fire from happening to you.

Protect Children from Exposed Outlets

If you have young children in your home, it’s important that you use child-proof outlet covers on unused receptacles. You can find outlet covers and tamper resistant outlets at your local hardware store. If you replace your standard outlets with tamper resistant outlets, be sure to hire a professional electrician to install them. Another tip to keep young kids away from outlets is to block access to the outlets using furniture like a couch or table or shelving.

Don’t Overload Outlets

Do you have an outlet that is powering a couple power strips and a dozen electronics? This can be dangerous. Don’t overload your outlets with too many powered electronics or appliances. Try to move some to another outlet. If you aren’t using an electrical appliance, like a blender or toaster, unplug it when you don’t need it. Overloading an outlet can trip the circuit or worse, it can lead to a fire.

Turn Off Appliances Before Turning Circuit Back On

If you do experience a tripped circuit from overloading an outlet or a power surge, be sure to turn off any appliances that the circuit is powering. Also, unplug anything that is powered by the circuit. Once you have flipped the circuit back on, you can then turn on the appliances or the electronics that the circuit is powering.

Check Cords and Plugs

Over time cords can kink, tear and fray. A small fray in a cord can cause sparks which can lead to a fire pretty quickly. Make it a habit of always taking a look at any cords or power outlets that you are near. Not only make sure that the cords are in good condition but that the plugs are plugged into the outlets all the way. A loose plug on an outlet can also cause sparks or a short which can cause an electrical fire.

Light Bulb Safety

Light bulbs are the most commonly used electrical item in a home. With light bulbs located in every room of your home, it’s important to follow a few tips to ensure they don’t become a fire hazard. Always use the recommended wattage of bulb for each fixture. Using a higher wattage bulb can cause the fixture to overheat. Be careful with light bulbs near curtains or other fabric. The fabric can be blown on top of the bulb which can quickly lead to a fire.

If You Should Suffer a Fire, Contact the Professionals

Following the above tips should help reduce the risk of a house fire, but it can’t eliminate the risk. If you should suffer from a house fire, call the fire professionals at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua. They have the knowledge, expertise, and equipment to handle any size disaster.

Just call and we will be ready. We offer emergency fire board up services and free estimates on all services!

Ricks of Not Cleaning your Dryer Vents

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

According to FEMA, failure to clean home dryers causes 34% of home dryer fires. Home dryer fires cause $35 million in property loss and can even cause injury or death. To reduce the risk of these fires happening in your or your insured’s home or business, make sure you maintain and clean out your dryer vent.  Other tips for keeping your dryer vents clean from the National Fire Protection Agency include cleaning the lint filter before and after each load and making sure the outdoor vent flap will open and is not restricted by snow, a bird’s nest or other potential obstacles. For more information on cleaning dryer vents contact your local SERVPRO. Your local SERVPRO Team is available 24 hours a day, do not hesitate to call, day or night you are guaranteed to reach our office – (585) 393-0310

Mold Restoration

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Many types of mold exist.  And some mold is good- such as mold used in making blue cheese mold and mold used in the production of Penicillin. Not all kinds of molds cause health problems in all people. Molds produce allergens, but not all people will have the sensitivity to react to the molds. However, those allergens can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks in people who are allergic to mold.

For mold to grow it takes moisture and oxygen. Mold can grow on any organic substance such as wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment; however, mold growth can be controlled simply by controlling the moisture indoors.

If mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Over time mold can gradually destroy the things they grow on if the mold is not remediated.

Today builders are making buildings that are tightly sealed, and can lack adequate ventilation which can potentially lead to moisture buildup. Since mold requires water to grow, it is important to prevent moisture problems in buildings. Building materials, such as drywall, may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems can be a result of roof leaks, landscaping and lack of timely maintenance of moisture problems.

It is important to address any water issues whether sudden or on-going in order to eliminate or at least minimize the need for mold remediation services. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua can provide free estimates for mold damaged commercial properties. Our Team has the experience, knowledge, and NYS Mold Licensing to get your affected business back in working order.

What to do Immediately After a House Fire

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO.

When you have a water damage, let the experts handle it!

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

At one time or another, as a homeowner or renter, we have all had a disaster.  Sometimes it’s an easy clean-up and sometimes we know that we are in over our heads.  Many times though, homeowners have a water damage and with a little elbow grease, a shop vac and some towels they try to mitigate the damage themselves.  Unfortunately, some time later they end up calling the experts for more costly repairs due to damaged materials from improperly drying their home and even mold.  Here are some facts about water damage.

  • It is 1,200 times easier to remove water than to evaporate it? That’s why proper extraction of standing water is key to the dry out of a structure.  Many times shop vacs are unable to do a sufficient job quick enough.
  • Drywall exposed to water can wick up the wall at a rate of one inch per hour for the first 24 hours. If left for a few days while you are out of town it can wick all of the way up the wall to the seam at 4 ft.
  • The insulation in your walls will wick water from the drywall as well. Without proper weep holes drilled to allow air flow you walls may seem dry, but you have insulation still festering with moisture and eventually mold.  Insulation also loses its R-Value (its ability to insulate properly) when it is wet.
  • Improperly dried drywall becomes brittle and weak causing it to break apart very easily. Interestingly it seem that drywall that is dried properly can actually become stronger which was discovered by water restoration companies that used what they call “flood rooms” for training.  Each week the rooms are flooded and used for training proper dry out techniques.  They found after about five “floods” the drywall had to be replaced because it would no longer allow water to wick up the walls.
  • Mold will start growing immediately after spores are attached to an item and it has food and moisture. It can easily grow within 24 to 48 hours and will colonize in 1-12 days.
  • Mold releases its spores when it is disturbed, so without proper removal you can spread it throughout your home trying to get rid of it.

These are just a few reasons you should entrust your water damage to the experts at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua and save yourself the time, money and sanity of having to restore your home more than once despite just one single water damage.

Do You Know What Mold is?

9/13/2018 (Permalink)

What is Mold?

Mold (or mould) is a term used to refer to fungi that grow in the form of multicellular thread-like structures called hyphae. Fungi that exist as single cells are called yeasts. Some molds and yeasts cause disease or food spoilage, others play an important role in biodegradation or in the production of various foods, beverages, antibiotics and enzymes.

Mold is also found in damp building materials where it often appears like stains and comes in a variety of colours. A must smell is an indication of microbial growth even when there is no visible growth. If mold is allowed to grow in homes or offices it can contribute to poor indoor air quality. Some molds such as the Dry Rot Fungus, Serpula lacrymans, are highly destructive. For more details about dry rot fungus read Occurrence and Significance of Dry Rot Fungus, Serpula lacrymans.

Mold growth requires moisture. The sources of moisture could be Washing, cooking, air humidifiers, condensation or leaks from plumbing or from the outside. Poor ventilation contributes to higher humidity levels and leads to condensation, which also allows mold growth.

Molds release small “spores” into the air. So, when mold grows indoors, the number of mold spores and fragments is usually higher indoors than it is outdoors. These spores are small enough that people can actually inhale them deep into the lungs.

Add Duct Cleaning to Your House Cleaning List

9/12/2018 (Permalink)

Very often, when a fire or smoke damage occurs, the air ducts in your home can be affected. Here is some information on getting them cleaned from Home Advisor: The cost of cleaning your air ducts is determined by the size of your air duct system and the extent of contamination. On average, homeowners spend between $265 and $471, with $352 being the national average.

Did you know that cleaning your ducts and vents can help airflow and increase energy efficiency? According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), keeping your air ducts and vents clear can increase energy efficiency and indoor air quality. While the cost to clean ducts and vents might sound high, the benefits to homeowners?especially those sensitive to allergens?is worth considering.

When looking to have your ducts cleaned, or any other part of your home, for any reason, give SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua a call (585-393-0310)! We are here to help you make it "Like it never even happened."

Sensing Water in your Home that you Can't See

9/12/2018 (Permalink)

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor  air quality  issues  over time.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur.

Severe Flooding Tips

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Since SERVPRO supports the American Red Cross we love sharing their tips when it comes to flooding occasions.

Check out www.redcross.org for more information!

FLOODING Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:

1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

2.Stay away from floodwaters.

3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

4. Keep children out of the water.

5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

DOWNLOAD EMERGENCY People should download the free Red Cross Emergency App to receive emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of tornadoes, flooding and other disasters, as well as locations of shelters. The App also includes emergency first aid information and a Family Safe feature which allows people to instantly see if loved ones are okay. The free Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.

Understanding Mold

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building.  This is a fallacy.  Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors.  These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems. Consider these facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air  and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/Heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Soda Blasting, What's That??

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

I don't know about you, but the first thing I think about when someone says 'soda blasting' is a bunch of kids running around shaking up cans of soda and spraying them at each other. If you were thinking along the same lines as me, you will be surprised to find out that soda blasting is a very helpful way to clean a fire damaged house.

Soda blasting is a process in which sodium bicarbonate is applied against a surface using compressed air. Soda blasting is a non-destructive method for many applications in cleaning, paint & varnish stripping, automotive restoration, industrial equipment maintenance, rust removal, graffiti removal, oil removal, soot remediation and much more.

Fun Fact:An early use of soda blasting was to restore the Statue of Liberty in the 1980s!

We have used this method of cleaning in many homes in the Victor/Canandaigua area. So whether your  business is vandalized by graffiti or if your home has experienced soot damage from a fire, call your restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua located in Canandaigua NY to come soda blast your problems away!

Smoke and Soot Damage

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Hurricane Season

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua News And Updates

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Conditions that cause floods include heavy or steady rain for several hours or days that saturates the ground. Flash floods occur suddenly due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area.

Know the Difference
Flood/Flash Flood Watch—Flooding or flash flooding is possible in your area.
Flood/Flash Flood Warning—Flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area.

What to do:

Listen to area radio and television stations and a NOAA Weather Radio for possible flood warnings and reports of flooding in progress or other critical
information from the National Weather Service (NWS).
- Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
- When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
- Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
- If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
- Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
- Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.
- Because standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S. For more information on flood insurance, please visit the National Flood Insurance Program Web site at www.FloodSmart.gov.

Commercial Large Loss

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

A water main break on Sunday caused this commercial building to have a major flood.  This affected their main store area, kitchen,  cafeteria, and a few offices.  The water and dirt brought in from outside left a lot of damage to their business.

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was called on Monday to help clean up the mess.  And the business owners were very glad they were able to save their merchandise from any further damage.  They couldn't believe we were able to respond so quickly and with a large amount of drying equipment. Our customer was thrilled with the results.

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was able to make it "Like it never even happened" and they were fully operational within the same week as the loss.

Flood Damage and SERVPRO

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Say the words flood damage and people rightly think of foot deep water in their basement or entire neighborhoods underwater. This time of year, it can be a common, even multiple occurrences in some parts of New York.

SERVPRO is an expert in reducing the obvious flood damage to Victor/Canandaigua homes. What surprises our clients are just how many ways a flood can destroy a home even after the water has been removed. Here are the most common ways your home can be dry as a bone and still be unlivable.
Odor - This may seem like a minor thing, but some folks can be allergic to just the smell. If you don't get rid of it, you won't be able to live in your home, and you certainly won't be able to sell it. The smell is also indicative of a worse problem.

Mold and Mildew - If not found and immediately treated and removed, mold and mildew will cause respiratory problems that will drive you out of the house. It is particularly dangerous to people with asthma. If the mold and mildew get into sheetrock and cannot be destroyed by industrial cleaners, then walls will have to be replaced.

Electrical System - If flooding reached high enough to reach electrical outlets, then those have to be inspected by our SERVPRO professionals and possibly be replaced before the power can be turned back on. If they have been compromised, then there is the possibility of a fire hazard when the lights are turned back on.
Plumbing and Sewage - Flooding can overwhelm and damage a home's plumbing system. If it stays under water too long, there is also the possibility that raw sewage can flow backward into your home through the toilets. Septic tanks can also be compromised in the same manner. The cleaning process now becomes much more extensive.

Bacterial Contamination - If sewage gets into your home, this also brings the threat of bacteria which can cause more respiratory problems and other health concerns such as having your kidneys and intestinal (digestive) systems compromised as well.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

Flood water in a home is a dangerous threat and needs to be removed quickly. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua understands that this is only the first step. Other hazards have to be addressed before you are safe again in your own home. To begin the process or if you want to schedule an inspection to help prevent problems in the future, call us today at 585-393-0310.

Commercial Duct Cleaning

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

  • The process begins by using patented equipment, including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts tot he duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of particles in the air-stream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

FEMA Tips for Flood Preparation

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

Before the Flood:

  • Have a qualified professional elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel if susceptible to flooding.
  • Install "check valves" in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up into the drain of your home or business
  • Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to help avoid seepage.

During the Flood:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of water can make you fall.

After the Flood:

  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community's water supply is safe to drink.
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Floods Strike Everywhere

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

On Average, floods coast $6 billion in annual losses in the United States.  The following are a few more little-known facts:

  • Floods kill an average of 140 people per year in the United States, making flooding the most deadly natural disaster.
  • More than half of all fatalities during floods are auto related, often the result of drivers misjudging the depth of water on a road and being swept away in a swiftly moving current.
  • The principle cause of floods in the eastern United States are hurricanes and storms.
  • The principle cause of floods in the western United States are snow-melt and rainstorms.
  • Underpasses can be some of the most dangerous places during a flash flood - especially at night, when it's difficult to see.

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Even though some forms of mold can pass value to our lives, other forms of mold can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusion can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide a food source for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health hazard.

Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

1/31/2018 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disrupted, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don't touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don't blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don't attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don't spray bleach or other disinfectant on the mold.

Mold Remediation

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

Be an Informed Resource

Molds are found in every environment, and mold spores reproduce rapidly when moisture is present. An Institute of Medicine study found excess dampness indoors encourages the growth of molds and other organisms, causing a public health problem. The EPA advised that the potential health concerns from molds are an important reason to prevent moisture problems leading to mold growth. It is especially important to clean up existing indoor mold growth to increase property appeal and retain its value. If a property has experienced a water intrusion, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua can inspect the damage to see whether moisture has penetrated materials or is allowing mold growth.

Control Moisture, Reduce Mold

  • Correct any water leaks or standing water.
  • Remove standing water under cooling coils or air handling units.
  • Properly Maintain humidifiers, if used.
  • Replace wet or visibly moldy insulation materials.
  • Steam cleaning and other methods involving moisture should not be used on any kind of duct work.
  • Install a ventilation system.

Limited Fire Damage

Handling the damage properly could prevent long-term effects.

After contacting SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua, the following steps can be taken to help prevent further damage:

Preventing Holiday Fires

1/29/2018 (Permalink)

Residential fires during the holiday season are more frequent, more costly, and more deadly than at any other time of the year. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) reports more than double the number of open-flame fires on Christmas Day than on an average day, and about twice as many on New Year’s Day. And when those fires occur, they do more damage: Property loss during a holiday fire is 34% greater than in an average fire, and the number of fatalities per thousand fires is nearly 70% higher. When the source of the fire is a highly flammable Christmas tree, the toll in property and lives is even greater.

To keep your household from becoming a holiday fire statistic, here are some safety tips to follow.

Cooking

Cooking is the top cause of holiday fires, according to the USFA. The most common culprit is food that’s left unattended. It’s easy to get distracted; take a pot holder with you when you leave the kitchen as a reminder that you have something on the stove. Make sure to keep a kitchen fire extinguisher that’s rated for all types of fires, and check that smoke detectors are working.

If you’re planning to deep-fry your holiday turkey, do it outside, on a flat, level surface at least 10 feet from the house.

Candles

The incidence of candle fires is four times higher during December than during other months. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas/Christmas Eve and New Year’s/New Year’s Eve. (The fifth is Halloween.)

To reduce the danger, maintain about a foot of space between the candle and anything that can burn. Set candles on sturdy bases or cover with hurricane globes. Never leave flames unattended. Before bed, walk through each room to make sure candles are blown out. For atmosphere without worry, consider flameless LED candles.

Christmas Trees

It takes less than 30 seconds for a dry tree to engulf a room in flames, according to the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Standards and Technology. “They make turpentine out of pine trees,” notes Tom Olshanski, spokesman for the USFA. “A Christmas tree is almost explosive when it goes.”

To minimize risk, buy a fresh tree with intact needles, get a fresh cut on the trunk, and water it every day. A well-watered tree is almost impossible to ignite. Keep the tree away from heat sources, such as a fireplace or radiator, and out of traffic patterns. If you’re using live garlands and other greenery, keep them at least three feet away from heating sources.

No matter how well the tree is watered, it will start to dry out after about four weeks, Olshanski says, so take it down after the holidays. Artificial trees don’t pose much of a fire hazard; just make sure yours is flame-retardant.

Decorative Lights

Inspect light strings, and throw out any with frayed or cracked wires or broken sockets. When decorating, don’t run more than three strings of lights end to end. “Stacking the plugs is much safer when you’re using a large quantity of lights,” explains Brian L. Vogt, director of education for holiday lighting firm Christmas Décor. Extension cords should be in good condition and UL-rated for indoor or outdoor use. Check outdoor receptacles to make sure the ground fault interrupters don’t trip. If they trip repeatedly, Vogt says, that’s a sign that they need to be replaced.

When hanging lights outside, avoid using nails or staples, which can damage the wiring and increase the risk of a fire. Instead, use UL-rated clips or hangers. And take lights down within 90 days, says John Drengenberg, director of consumer safety for Underwriters Laboratories.  “If you leave them up all year round, squirrels chew on them and they get damaged by weather.”

Kids Playing with Matches

The number of blazes — and, tragically, the number of deaths — caused by children playing with fire goes up significantly during the holidays. From January through March, 13% of fire deaths are the result of children playing with fire, the USFA reports; in December, that percentage doubles. So keep matches and lighters out of kids’ reach. “We tend to underestimate the power of these tools,” says Meri-K Appy, president of the nonprofit Home Safety Council. “A match or lighter could be more deadly than a loaded gun in the hands of a small child.”

Fireplaces

Soot can harden on chimney walls as flammable creosote, so before the fireplace season begins, have your chimney inspected to see if it needs cleaning. Screen the fireplace to prevent embers from popping out onto the floor or carpet, and never use flammable liquids to start a fire in the fireplace. Only burn seasoned wood — no wrapping paper.

When cleaning out the fireplace, put embers in a metal container and set them outside to cool for 24 hours before disposal.

Space Heater Safety Tips

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

9 Do's When it Comes to Space Heaters

1) Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from combustible materials, including beds, sofas, curtains, papers, clothes, etc.

2) Make sure the heaters power cord is not damaged or frayed in any way.

3) Make sure the heater is securely plugged into the power outlet. Ensure it does not come loose or fall out.

4) Ensure your heater is on a stable and level surface with minimal risk of it getting knocked over.

5) Make sure your space heater has been certified as safe to use. You should see a safety logo on the back somewhere.

6) Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

7) Ensure your unit is turned off when you go to sleep, in a different room, or unable to keep an eye on it.

8) It is wise to teach everyone in your household how to properly operate your heater.

9) If your space heater requires fuel, make sure you refill it with the right kind... or you will most likely cause a fire.

What is the Science of Drying?

The knowledge  of  psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. Psychrometrics are terms used to describe the field of engineering concerned with the determination of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and  then place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of N.E. Monroe County are highly trained in the science of drying. We follow strict and specific industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages.

If it wasn't for our knowledge and expertise, this ceiling and floor would have been lost from the damage above. We were able to make our customers disaster "Like it never even happened."

Commercial Large Loss

What To Do Before A Storm Hits

9/6/2017 (Permalink)

BEFORE THE STORM

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minuets after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could have blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close wind blinds, shades, or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.
