Trauma Cleanup Specialists

12/8/2020 (Permalink)

When a significant traumatic event takes place in your home or business, the area needs to be thoroughly disinfected and cleaned in the shortest time possible. Here are a few reasons why it is crucial to address the cleanup of the situation as soon as possible.

Pathogens can spread fast – After an event that involves significant blood or bodily fluid loss, the risk of blood borne infectious pathogens is very high. Proper trauma cleanup removes all pathogens from the area, cleans the air and neutralizes the risk of spreading it further.

Replacement of fabrics and affected surfaces –Many times, furniture and other surfaces may be stained with fluids and will need replacement. A professional trauma cleaning specialist will be able to ascertain what surfaces can be restored and what surfaces will need replacing, depending on the severity of the event.

Emotional Recovery- Often times, traumatic events that require calling on the services of a professional are devastating to the residents of the home. If it involved the death of a pet or a loved one, returning to the site of the event will be a very negative emotional experience. A thorough professional cleaning of the area will begin the road to recovery for all affected parties. It is also far easier for a professional team who is emotionally detached from the event to complete the cleaning process.

Our technicians follow OSHA and EPA protocols to help transform an unsafe environment back into a clean, safe home or business. Our first focus is always safety. We will always treat your property and those in grieving with the greatest empathy and respect in the face of trying circumstances. Our team of IICRC certified professionals are prepared to help you and your family on the road to recovery. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is always here to help, 24/7. (585) 393-0310

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and references guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufactures, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration filed changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Fall Weather can Trigger Allergies

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

When many people think of allergies, they think of springtime, but fall can be just as troublesome as the spring months. Here’s why as the days get shorter, your runny nose, itchy eyes and scratchy throat might worsen.

  1. Ragweed pollinates in the fall. The most common fall allergy is ragweed, a soft-stemmed weed that produces vast amounts of pollen – about a million grains per plant every day! These grains of pollen are so lightweight they can travel up to 400 miles on the wind. Ragweed pollinates from mid-August to October, depending on where you live. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, an estimated 10-20% of Americans suffer from ragweed allergies.
  2. Mold spores are released in the fall. If you are allergic to the spores of mold or other fungi, you likely experience symptoms in the fall. Molds can be found wherever there is moist, organic material.  Outdoors, they grow on plants, rotting logs and decaying leaves. Mold spores are released in the fall and spread through the air as crops are harvested and leaves fall to the ground.
  3. Unpredictable weather extends fall allergy seasons. Warm, dry weather that lasts longer than usual in the fall months allows ragweed pollen to linger and continue to cause symptoms. In areas that experience a wetter-than-normal fall, mold spores can circulate later into the season.
  4. Dry indoor air triggers allergy symptoms. As the temperature cools outside, people fire up their heating systems, leading to drier indoor air and increased circulation of dust and pollen. Low humidity inside a home can dry out people out and cause inflammation, triggering allergy symptoms. To prevent problems caused by dry air, aim for an indoor humidity level of 40-50%; use a hygrometer to monitor humidity levels.

We have the Equipment!

9/18/2019 (Permalink)

The Hydroxyl Generator (or more commonly known as ‘Titan’) is one of the most scientifically-advanced pieces of equipment we use to combat odors due to bio hazard, fire or water damage events.

The main benefit of using a true hydroxyl generator is that they are safe to use in occupied areas for deodorization purposes. For any businesses, they love this machine because it means less out of pocket expenses and henceforth, less business disruption!

These generators have been successfully tested on any restoration features that SERVPRO specializes in including protein fires, floods, dead body situations, skunk odors, pet urine odors, musty odors and many types of odors. An important note: the Titan is NOT intended for mold use.

Here’s a rundown of some additional facts in order to give you the inside scoop, should you ever need to reach out to us for smoke/soot deodorization needs:

When to Use:

  • When odors, gases and organic pollutants are needed to be remediated

 Applications:

  • Use on fire and flood damage restoration jobs
  • Use to destroy odors from cigarette smoke, dead body, urine, garbage, airborne VOCs and more

Tips:

  • Always remove the source of the odor before operation
  • For optimum performance, a 60%+ humidity level is best. If needed, place a bucket of water or a wet towel behind the machine to allow more moisture to be pulled into the air stream.
  • Use air movers to circulate the air for thorough air cleaning.
  • Although purifying an area depends on many variables, a general time guide for purifying a 1,000 cubic foot area with light to moderator odor is 1 to 3 hours.

As always feel free to reach out to SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua at any time for more information on pieces of restoration hardware. We have helpful staff willing to explain further any of our services – (585) 393-0310

Do You Know What Mold is?

9/13/2018 (Permalink)

What is Mold?

Mold (or mould) is a term used to refer to fungi that grow in the form of multicellular thread-like structures called hyphae. Fungi that exist as single cells are called yeasts. Some molds and yeasts cause disease or food spoilage, others play an important role in biodegradation or in the production of various foods, beverages, antibiotics and enzymes.

Mold is also found in damp building materials where it often appears like stains and comes in a variety of colours. A must smell is an indication of microbial growth even when there is no visible growth. If mold is allowed to grow in homes or offices it can contribute to poor indoor air quality. Some molds such as the Dry Rot Fungus, Serpula lacrymans, are highly destructive. For more details about dry rot fungus read Occurrence and Significance of Dry Rot Fungus, Serpula lacrymans.

Mold growth requires moisture. The sources of moisture could be Washing, cooking, air humidifiers, condensation or leaks from plumbing or from the outside. Poor ventilation contributes to higher humidity levels and leads to condensation, which also allows mold growth.

Molds release small “spores” into the air. So, when mold grows indoors, the number of mold spores and fragments is usually higher indoors than it is outdoors. These spores are small enough that people can actually inhale them deep into the lungs.

Understanding Mold

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building.  This is a fallacy.  Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors.  These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems. Consider these facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air  and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/Heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua News And Updates

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Conditions that cause floods include heavy or steady rain for several hours or days that saturates the ground. Flash floods occur suddenly due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area.

Know the Difference
Flood/Flash Flood Watch—Flooding or flash flooding is possible in your area.
Flood/Flash Flood Warning—Flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area.

What to do:

Listen to area radio and television stations and a NOAA Weather Radio for possible flood warnings and reports of flooding in progress or other critical
information from the National Weather Service (NWS).
- Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
- When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
- Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
- If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
- Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
- Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.
- Because standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S. For more information on flood insurance, please visit the National Flood Insurance Program Web site at www.FloodSmart.gov.

Different Types of Mold

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

From the Ordinary

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Even though some forms of mold can pass value to our lives, other forms of mold can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusion can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide a food source for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health hazard.

Mold Remediation

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

Be an Informed Resource

Molds are found in every environment, and mold spores reproduce rapidly when moisture is present. An Institute of Medicine study found excess dampness indoors encourages the growth of molds and other organisms, causing a public health problem. The EPA advised that the potential health concerns from molds are an important reason to prevent moisture problems leading to mold growth. It is especially important to clean up existing indoor mold growth to increase property appeal and retain its value. If a property has experienced a water intrusion, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua can inspect the damage to see whether moisture has penetrated materials or is allowing mold growth.

Control Moisture, Reduce Mold

  • Correct any water leaks or standing water.
  • Remove standing water under cooling coils or air handling units.
  • Properly Maintain humidifiers, if used.
  • Replace wet or visibly moldy insulation materials.
  • Steam cleaning and other methods involving moisture should not be used on any kind of duct work.
  • Install a ventilation system.
